Outreach

Our Philosophy

At St. John’s, we believe that God calls us to build relationships that transform lives—ours and those of others. Each time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we renew our commitment to living out God’s kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven.” Outreach is how we connect with our neighbors, offering and receiving care, dignity, and love. It’s about walking alongside one another, sharing food with the hungry, offering clean water to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, and creating spaces of freedom and belonging.

For us, outreach isn’t a project; it’s a way of living as the Body of Christ. Jesus calls us to love one another and work together to build a more just and compassionate world. Whether you are an organization looking to collaborate or an individual seeking ways to make a difference, we would love to connect with you.

Backpacks of Food

Every week during the school year we send bags of food home in the backpacks of 66 local children who could use a bit of extra supplemental nutrition over the weekend. Bags include 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners, and a few snacks. Volunteers are always needed to shop, pack, and deliver bags to local schools.

Rice & Beans

On the fourth Thursday of every month (dates differ during the holiday season), St. John’s distributes 120 bags containing rice, beans, tide pods, potatoes, carrots, and apples to anyone who drives through our covered drive, no questions asked. Volunteers are needed to pack and distribute bags each month.

English as a Second Language

Twice a week, Calhoun Community College uses our Parish Hall to conduct ESL classes. We deeply value this collaboration and love that our Parish Hall is used for such a great purpose.

Financial Assistance

The Clergy will offer financial assistance to those in the community who could use a it of financial support due to financial setback or hardship. Assistance comes in the form of $50 paid to a business once every six months. Applications must be made in person.

Facility Use

St. John’s is blessed with a beautiful space. From our ampitheatre to our multi-purpose Parish Hall to our cozy library, we have a variety of meeting spaces. We love offering the use of our facility to local organizations for free or at a very low cost (cleaning fee). Please reach out to the rector for more information.

The Episcopal Center

St. John’s owns the grey brick building behind the church and provides rent-free space to two local organizations carrying on the ministry of reconciliation in our community: The Community Free Clinic and Parents and Children Together

Grant Process

We believe God came to redeem, to perfect, and to partner with humanity. Christ urged his disciples and commends us today to be in relationship with the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and the imprisoned. For when we care for the least among us, we care for Christ.

Each year St. John’s awards about $51,000 in grants to local organizations who seek to serve the underserved in our community. Grants generally range from about $1000 – $5000, and it is our deep hope that these grants will enable organizations to continue a successful project or start a new one.

If you are interested in applying for a grant on behalf of your organization, contact the church office for dates to submit an application. Please note, applications are considered on an annual basis and must be resubmitted during each year’s grant process.

The Grants Committee will read and evaluate each request, make a site visit with each potential partner where necessary, decide what funds will be awarded. Organizations will be notified of whether they will receive a grant and the amount of said grand if so awarded.
